Decking gets chosen for appearance, cost and durability. Surface temperature almost never comes up, and it is the thing homeowners complain about most in the first summer.
The physics is simple
Dark absorbs, light reflects. Dense materials store heat and release it slowly; porous materials do not. A dark, dense surface in full Piedmont sun in July gets hot enough that nobody crosses it without shoes, which changes how the pool actually gets used.
How the common materials compare
- Broom-finished concrete, light colored. Moderate. Acceptable in most conditions. Gets warm but stays usable.
- Stamped and colored concrete. Depends almost entirely on color. Dark stains get genuinely hot, and the sealer used on stamped work adds to it.
- Concrete pavers. Similar to concrete, driven by color. Light pavers are a good compromise.
- Travertine. The best performer of the stone options by a clear margin, and the reason it is popular around pools despite the cost.
- Dark natural stone. Beautiful and hot. Fine in shade, difficult in open sun.
- Composite decking. Runs hotter than wood and considerably hotter than travertine. Worth checking specific product data, as newer boards vary.
- Wood. Comfortable underfoot, more maintenance than most people want next to water.
Texture matters as well
A textured surface holds less contact area against a foot, so it reads as cooler than a smooth surface at the same temperature. It is also considerably safer wet, which is the more important reason to choose it.
Design around it
Even the coolest material gets warm in full sun. The practical solution is a shaded path — a pergola over the route from the house, or planting on the west side — so the crossing at the hottest part of the day is not the whole deck.

Test it yourself
Any supplier can show you a sample. Put it in the sun for an hour on a hot afternoon and stand on it. That five-minute test settles the question better than any specification sheet, and it is the one thing we suggest every homeowner do before signing off on decking.
Slip resistance matters more than temperature
Heat is the complaint; slipping is the injury. Any pool deck surface needs to be genuinely non-slip when wet, which rules out smooth-troweled concrete, polished stone and glazed tile regardless of how they look.
Broom finish, textured stamped concrete, tumbled pavers, honed travertine and textured composite all perform reasonably. If you are looking at a sample, wet it and stand on it at a slight angle — that is a more useful test than any specification.
Sealers change both properties
A glossy sealer on stamped concrete makes it hotter, slicker and more prone to showing wear. A penetrating sealer protects without changing the surface much. For pool decking, penetrating sealers are almost always the right choice, and the wet-look finish that sells well in a showroom is the wrong product next to water.
Sealers also need reapplying every few years, which is a maintenance item worth knowing about before choosing a surface that depends on one.
Expansion joints and clay
Piedmont clay moves with moisture, and a large slab of concrete on top of it will crack unless it is given somewhere to move. Properly placed control and expansion joints are what determine whether a deck cracks where planned or randomly across the middle.
Pavers avoid the problem entirely, which is a genuine argument for them on expansive clay sites. They also allow individual units to be lifted and reset if the ground settles, which concrete does not.
A practical compromise
Many of our projects end up with travertine or light pavers in the immediate pool surround where people are barefoot and standing, and broom-finished concrete for the larger areas and paths where cost matters more than comfort. It looks intentional if the transition is designed, and it puts the money where it is actually felt.
