Where the Equipment Goes, and Why It Matters

The equipment pad is the least glamorous part of a pool project and one of the easiest to get wrong, because it is usually decided late and by whoever is holding the plumbing plan rather than by the homeowner.

Four things it has to balance

The usual compromise

Close to the pool for hydraulic efficiency, on the side of the house away from bedrooms and the neighbor's outdoor space, with a clear path to it, and screened rather than enclosed.

Screened rather than enclosed matters. Equipment needs airflow, particularly heaters and heat pumps, and a solid enclosure without proper clearance shortens equipment life and can void a warranty.

Freeze protection in North Carolina

We do not have Minnesota winters, but we do have nights below freezing and equipment that sits outside. Plumbing should drain properly, the pad should not sit in a wet spot, and automation should include freeze protection that runs the pump when temperatures drop.

Most of the freeze damage we see on service calls traces back to a pad that stayed wet and equipment installed with no thought to drainage.

Give yourself room for what comes later

Heaters get added. Automation gets added. A salt cell or a secondary sanitizer gets added. A pad sized exactly for the original equipment list means the next addition sits awkwardly on a paver alongside it.

Pouring a pad a couple of feet larger than you need is one of the cheapest decisions in the whole project.

Screening options that work

A slatted fence panel with airflow, a low wall on two sides, or planting set back far enough for service access. What does not work is a solid box, a locked enclosure with no clearance, or shrubs planted at their current size rather than their mature size.

Storage is part of the same problem

Every pool generates things that have to live somewhere: chemicals, test kits, a robotic cleaner, poles, brushes, nets, floats and covers. Households that did not plan for this end up with chemicals in a garage next to a car, which is both a safety issue and a corrosion issue.

Chemical storage wants to be cool, dry, ventilated, out of direct sun, locked where children can reach, and separate from anything metal. A small dedicated cabinet or a section of a pool house solves it. Chlorine and acid should never be stored adjacent to one another, and both should be off the floor in case of a leak.

Getting the electrical right

The pad needs a properly sized circuit, a disconnect within sight of the equipment, GFCI protection and equipotential bonding tying the metal components together. This is not a place to economise or to use a general-purpose electrician who has not done pool work — the bonding requirements in particular are specific and are inspected.

Plan the circuit for the equipment you may add rather than only what you are installing. Adding a heater later to a panel with no spare capacity is a much larger job than it sounds.

Drainage under and around the pad

Equipment sitting in standing water fails early. On Piedmont clay, water does not disappear on its own, so the pad wants to sit slightly proud of the surrounding grade with somewhere for water to go. On sloped lots this means intercepting the water coming downhill before it reaches the pad.

Distance and hydraulics in practice

As a rough guide, keeping the pad within about fifty feet of the pool avoids most of the efficiency penalty. Beyond that, pipe diameter needs to increase to keep flow velocity reasonable, which adds cost, and the pump works harder for the life of the pool. Where the ideal noise location and the ideal hydraulic location conflict, upsizing the pipe is usually the better compromise than accepting the noise.
