A pool uses less water over a year than most people assume and more than it needs to. The difference is almost entirely down to a few habits and one piece of equipment.
Where the water goes
- Evaporation. By far the largest share. An uncovered pool in a Piedmont summer loses a meaningful depth of water every week, and more on hot, dry, windy days.
- Splash-out. Real but modest, and proportional to how much the pool is used, which is not something to optimize away.
- Backwashing. Significant on sand and DE filters, negligible on cartridge filters.
- Draining for maintenance. Occasional and large when it happens.
- Leaks. Should be zero, and are not always.
A cover is the whole answer to the biggest number
A cover cuts evaporation dramatically — the majority of it. It also cuts heating cost and chemical loss for the same reason, since evaporating water takes heat and chemicals with it.
Any cover helps. A solar blanket is the cheapest and it works. An automatic cover is the one people actually use daily, which is what matters.
Reduce backwash volume
Backwash when the pressure gauge tells you to, not on a schedule. Many owners backwash far more often than the filter needs, and each cycle sends a substantial volume of treated water down the drain.
If you are replacing a filter, cartridge filters do not backwash at all. Cleaning cartridges uses a small fraction of the water.
Find the leaks
Some water loss is normal and some is not. The bucket test — a bucket of pool water on a step, marked, compared against the pool level over a day or two — separates evaporation from a leak and takes almost no effort.
A pool losing more than about a quarter inch a day in ordinary conditions is worth investigating. A slow leak wastes water continuously, wastes chemicals, and can undermine what is around the pool.
Other measures worth taking
- Keep the water level at the middle of the skimmer rather than to the brim, which reduces splash-out.
- Wind screening or planting, which reduces evaporation more than people expect on exposed lots.
- Do not run water features constantly in high summer.
- Maintain chemistry properly, so the pool never needs partial draining to correct a problem.
The realistic picture
A covered pool with a cartridge filter and no leaks uses a modest amount of water over a year — comparable to ordinary household use, and considerably less than irrigating the lawn it replaced.
Doing the bucket test properly
Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on a step so the water inside and outside are at similar levels. Mark both levels. Leave the pump running normally for twenty-four to forty-eight hours with no swimming, then compare.
If both dropped by the same amount, it is evaporation. If the pool dropped more, there is a leak. Running the test once with the pump on and once with it off narrows it further: a larger loss with the pump running points to the pressure side plumbing.
Where leaks usually are
Skimmer throats, light niches and return fittings account for a large share of residential pool leaks, and all three are relatively accessible. Plumbing leaks under decking are less common and considerably more expensive to locate and repair.
A pool that loses water only when the pump runs, or only when it does not, is telling you something useful. That distinction alone saves a leak detection company a great deal of time.
Draining is not routine
Partial draining should be occasional — to reduce stabiliser levels, or before a remodel. A pool that needs draining regularly to fix chemistry has a chemistry management problem rather than a water problem.
Never fully drain a pool without professional advice. A concrete shell in saturated Piedmont clay can float or crack from hydrostatic pressure when empty, which is a catastrophic and entirely avoidable failure.
Where the discharge goes
Backwash and drainage water contains chemicals, and discharging it into a storm drain, a creek or a neighbouring property is a problem in several jurisdictions in our area. A discharge point on your own land, away from septic fields and away from property lines, is the right answer.
Where volume is significant, letting chlorine dissipate for a day or two before discharging is good practice and in some places required.
Putting a number on it
A covered pool of typical residential size in the Triad, with a cartridge filter and no leaks, uses meaningfully less water over a year than keeping an equivalent area of lawn irrigated through a Piedmont summer. It is not the water consumer people assume it is — provided the cover is used and the leaks are found.
