The most common cause of a pool problem is not a bad chemical decision. It is a good decision made from a bad number.
Test strips
Fast, cheap and convenient, which is why most owners use them. Accurate enough for a quick check that things are broadly where they should be.
Their weaknesses are real: they degrade with age and humidity, the color matching is subjective, and they lose accuracy at the extremes — exactly the situations where you most need a good reading.
Reasonable for routine weekly checks. Not the basis for a significant correction.
Drop-based kits
The traditional reagent kit, and considerably more accurate than strips when used properly. Slower, and the technique matters — counting drops carefully, holding the bottle vertically, using the right sample volume.
A good drop kit that tests free and total chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid is the right primary tool for most owners. Reagents expire, so replace them annually.
Digital testers
Photometers remove the subjectivity of color matching and give a number. The good ones are genuinely accurate and the cheap ones are not necessarily better than a decent drop kit.
They need calibration and clean sample cells. A dirty cell produces a confident wrong answer, which is worse than an uncertain right one.
The professional test
Many pool stores test water free. It is worth doing a few times a season as a check against your own results, particularly at opening and if something is not behaving as expected.
Take a proper sample — elbow deep, away from returns, in a clean container, tested the same day.
What to test and how often
- Free chlorine and pH. Weekly at minimum, more often in heavy use or hot weather.
- Total alkalinity. Weekly to fortnightly. It buffers pH, so drifting alkalinity explains most pH problems.
- Calcium hardness. Monthly. Important with well water and important for protecting plaster.
- Cyanuric acid. Monthly. Rises quietly with stabilized chlorine and, once high, makes chlorine ineffective at normal levels.
- Salt. Monthly on a salt system.
The habit is what matters
A cheap method used consistently beats an accurate method used occasionally. Same day, same time, written down. The written record is what lets you see a trend before it becomes a problem — and trends are where the useful information is.
Taking a proper sample
The test is only as good as the sample. Take it elbow deep rather than at the surface, away from returns and skimmers, away from where chemicals were recently added, and in a clean container that has not held anything else.
Surface water is not representative — it is where chemicals were added, where sun has degraded chlorine, and where debris sits. A sample from a foot down in the middle of the pool tells you what the pool is actually doing.
Testing after adding chemicals
Give the pool time to circulate before retesting. Testing twenty minutes after adding acid gives a reading from partially mixed water and leads to overcorrection, which is one of the most common ways owners end up chasing pH up and down.
A full turnover — several hours on most residential pools — is the honest interval. Adding, waiting and testing the next day is a better routine than adding and testing the same afternoon.
Cyanuric acid deserves special attention
Stabiliser protects chlorine from sunlight, which is genuinely useful in a North Carolina summer. It also accumulates, because it does not break down or evaporate — every tablet and every bag of stabilised shock adds more.
Above a certain level, chlorine becomes progressively less effective and the pool needs far more of it to achieve the same sanitation. Owners in this situation describe a pool that will not hold chlorine, and the answer is not more chlorine; it is partially draining and refilling to dilute the stabiliser.
Testing it monthly is what prevents that whole situation, and it is the test most often skipped.
Writing it down
Date, results, what was added. A record turns individual readings into a trend, and trends are where the useful information is: alkalinity drifting down over six weeks, stabiliser climbing through the season, chlorine demand rising as the water warms.
A pool with a written history is a pool that gets diagnosed in minutes rather than guessed at.
