Homeowners resist the fence more than any other required element, usually after seeing what a standard chain-link installation does to a backyard. There are better options and they all meet the same code.
What the code requires
Minimum height, no gaps a small child can pass through, no climbable horizontal features on the outside, and gates that are self-closing, self-latching, opening outward, with the latch out of a child's reach. Those are not negotiable, and they are the parameters every option below works within.
Options that look intentional
Aluminum picket. The most common choice for good reason. Slim vertical pickets that read as nearly transparent from a distance, powder-coated black to disappear against planting. Durable, low maintenance, and available in code-compliant configurations.
Removable mesh. Tensioned mesh panels on removable posts. Genuinely unobtrusive, and the panels come out when adults are using the pool. Popular with families with young children who want the barrier close to the water rather than at the property line.
Glass panels. Frameless or semi-frameless. The most expensive option and the one that disappears most completely, which makes sense where the pool overlooks a view. Shows every water spot, which is a real maintenance consideration.
Integrated with landscape. Sections of wall, planting beds and level changes doing part of the work, with fence only where it is needed. Requires careful design to stay compliant but produces the most natural result.
Position matters as much as material
A barrier at the property line encloses the whole yard, which some families prefer and which usually means more fence. A barrier close to the pool encloses less, uses less material, and keeps the rest of the yard open.
The close-in option needs more careful design so it does not feel like a cage around the water, but it is frequently the better answer on a larger lot.
Where compliance actually fails
- Gate latches that stop catching properly as hinges settle. Check them regularly.
- Furniture, planters or grills left against the fence, creating a climbing route.
- Gates propped open during gatherings, which is when supervision is also weakest.
- Gaps at grade where the ground has eroded under a fence line.
- A house wall forming part of the barrier with an unaddressed door.
Plan it with the pool
A fence designed with the pool looks like part of the project. A fence added afterward to satisfy an inspector looks exactly like what it is, and it usually costs more because the easy routes are already covered in decking.
Gate hardware is the part that fails
Fence panels last decades. Gate hardware does not. Hinges settle, self-closing mechanisms weaken, and latches that caught reliably in year one stop catching in year four. Since the gate is the part of the barrier that matters most, this is worth a deliberate check every few months.
Spend on good hardware at installation. The difference in cost between adequate and good gate hardware is small relative to the pool, and it is the difference between a barrier that stays compliant and one that quietly stops working.
Self-latching heights and direction
Code specifies latch height and that gates open outward, away from the pool. Both exist for a reason: a high latch is out of a small child's reach, and an outward-opening gate cannot be pushed open by a child leaning on it.
Homeowners occasionally reverse a gate for convenience after the final inspection. That is the sort of change that matters, and it is worth resisting.
Cost ranges and where to spend
Aluminium picket is the value option and looks good in almost any setting. Removable mesh costs less than most people expect and disappears completely when taken down. Glass is several times the cost of aluminium and belongs where there is a view genuinely worth preserving.
Where budget is tight, a good approach is aluminium for the majority of the run with a short glass or mesh section at the one place where the view matters. It costs a fraction of glass throughout and achieves most of the effect.
Planting with a fence
A fence line softened with planting reads as landscape rather than barrier. The rule is to plant on the outside rather than the inside, and to choose species whose mature form will not provide a climbing route or push the fence out of line.
Evergreen shrubs set back a couple of feet from an aluminium fence make the fence largely disappear from the house side within a few seasons, which is the cheapest way to make a required barrier look intentional.
