Heating is what turns a four-month pool into a seven-month pool in the Piedmont, and it is the piece of equipment homeowners most often size on a guess.
What sizing actually depends on
- Surface area of the pool, which is where heat is lost.
- How much temperature rise you want over ambient.
- Whether the pool is covered when not in use — the single largest factor.
- How exposed the site is to wind.
- How quickly you want it to reach temperature from cold.
Surface area matters more than volume, because the great majority of heat loss happens at the surface. A wide, shallow pool loses more heat than a small, deep one of the same volume.
Gas versus heat pump in North Carolina
Gas. Heats fast, works at any outdoor temperature, costs more to run. The right choice when you want the pool warm on demand — a cold weekend in October, a spa you use year-round.
Heat pump. Much cheaper to run, slower to heat, and its efficiency falls as air temperature drops. It works well in our climate for most of the season and struggles at the edges when you most want it.
Our climate suits heat pumps for the main season, with gas making sense where genuinely cold-weather use is planned or where a spa needs to come up to temperature quickly.
The cover changes everything
An uncovered heated pool loses most of its heat overnight through evaporation. Heating one without a cover is close to heating the sky, and the run cost reflects that.
A cover — solid, automatic, or even a solar blanket — routinely halves heating cost or better. Any conversation about heater running costs that does not start with the cover is missing the main variable.
Realistic expectations for the shoulder season
A heat pump will hold a comfortable temperature through much of April, May, September and October here, provided the pool is covered when not in use. Getting comfortable swimming in December is a gas proposition and an expensive one.
Most Triad homeowners find the sensible target is extending the season by six to eight weeks at each end rather than year-round use.
Automation pays for itself here
Scheduling the heater around when the pool is actually used, rather than holding temperature continuously, is where the running cost is controlled. Combined with a cover, it is the difference between a heater you use and a heater you switch off after seeing the first bill.
Getting the sizing calculation right
The rough method any installer should use starts with pool surface area, the temperature rise you want above average ambient, and how quickly you want to get there. Larger pools and larger temperature rises need more output, and wanting the rise in eight hours rather than twenty-four roughly triples the requirement.
Undersizing is the more common error. A heater that cannot overcome overnight losses on a cool April night never reaches temperature at all, which makes it feel broken rather than small. Oversizing costs more up front and wastes little, since a heater that reaches setpoint simply cycles off.
Gas supply is a real constraint
A pool heater is a large gas appliance. On natural gas, the existing meter and line may not have capacity for it alongside the household load, and upgrading the service is a utility job with its own timeline and cost.
On propane, a pool heater consumes enough that tank size and delivery frequency become a genuine consideration. Both of these should be checked before a gas heater is specified, not after it is installed.
Heat pumps and Piedmont shoulder seasons
A heat pump's output falls as air temperature drops, which is exactly when you want heat. In practice in the Triad they perform well down to around the mid-fifties and become slow below that. That covers most of April through October, which is the season most homeowners actually want.
Sizing a heat pump generously helps here, because a larger unit maintains usable output further into the cool weather. The running cost difference between sizes is small since both run until setpoint is reached.
Solar as a supplement
Solar heating panels work well in our climate as a supplement, particularly for extending the shoulder season on a pool that already has a cover. They need roof or ground area with good southern exposure and they add nothing on a cold cloudy week, which is why they are a supplement rather than a system on their own.
