Pool ownership is much less stressful when the replacement costs are expected. Nothing here lasts forever, and most of it announces itself before it fails.
Typical service lives
- Pump. Eight to twelve years. Variable-speed models often longer, since they spend most of their life running gently. Motors can frequently be replaced without replacing the whole unit.
- Filter. The tank lasts a long time — fifteen years or more. Cartridges want replacing every few years, and sand every five to seven.
- Heater. Gas heaters typically eight to twelve years; heat pumps often longer. Water chemistry is the main variable, as scale and corrosion inside the heater shorten life dramatically.
- Salt cell. Three to seven years. A genuine consumable rather than a repair item, and one to budget for.
- LED lights. Ten years or more. The fixture and seal often fail before the diodes.
- Automation controller. Ten years or so, though software support sometimes ends earlier than the hardware fails.
- Safety cover. Eight to twelve years depending on exposure. Automatic cover fabric shorter, around five to eight.
- Interior finish. Plain plaster ten to fifteen years; aggregate finishes fifteen to twenty-five.
- Tile and coping. Decades, if the pool has been maintained. Usually replaced with the finish rather than on their own.
What shortens all of it
Water chemistry, by a wide margin. A pool run at consistently unbalanced chemistry destroys heaters, corrodes fittings, etches finishes and shortens salt cell life. It is the cheapest maintenance available and the one most often neglected.
After that: running equipment harder than necessary, poor drainage around the pad, no freeze protection, and installing equipment in an enclosure without airflow.
Planning for it
Add up the list above and divide by the years. It is a modest annual figure, and setting it aside means a failed heater in June is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
Replace with an eye to efficiency
When a pump or heater reaches the end of its life, the replacement is usually significantly more efficient than what came out. A single-speed pump replaced with a variable-speed model frequently pays for the upgrade portion within a couple of seasons.
The warning signs
Rising energy use with no change in runtime, unusual noise, a heater that takes longer than it used to, pressure that climbs faster after a filter clean, and a salt system reporting low output. All of those are advance notice, and all of them are easier to act on before the failure than after.
Repair or replace
For a pump, a failed motor on an otherwise sound unit is usually worth replacing on its own — unless the pump is single-speed, in which case replacing the whole unit with a variable-speed model is almost always the better decision on running cost alone.
For a heater, the age matters. A heat exchanger failure on a heater past eight years is generally the end of it; the same failure at three years is a repair. Control boards are usually worth replacing at any age.
For a filter, tanks rarely fail. Valves, laterals and internal components do, and they are all serviceable.
Keep the paperwork
Model numbers, serial numbers, installation dates and warranty documents in one place. It sounds trivial and it saves real time and money — a warranty claim that cannot be substantiated is not a warranty claim, and ordering the correct part for a ten-year-old heater without the model number is an afternoon of guessing.
Chemistry, again
It is worth stating plainly because it drives every number above: consistently balanced water roughly doubles the useful life of the expensive components. Aggressive water corrodes heat exchangers and etches finishes. Scaling water coats heater elements and salt cells, reducing efficiency and then destroying them.
Automated chemistry control is expensive, and set against the replacement cost of a heater and a couple of salt cells it is not obviously the expensive option.
Plan replacements in the off-season
A pump that is showing its age in September is better replaced in October than in June. Off-season scheduling is easier, and you are not swimming while you wait for a part.
Keeping a rough replacement calendar — noting the install year of each component alongside its expected life — turns most of this from an emergency into a diary entry.
